Judges’ Q&A: Joel Gill

Judge: Joel Gill
Role: Head of User Experience & Visual Design at HSBC

  1. Do you have a favourite app & website in terms of the design and user experience?
I really like the new Expedia APP. Irrespective of where or on what you have made a booking, everything hooks up and arrives on your APP. Great experience, and adds a huge volume of confidence to users. Very cool.

  1. Which industries, in your opinion, tend to deliver the worst user experiences, and why?
Retail. Specifically Clothing. Hideous. Hideous. Hideous. I don’t know any girl who’s bought one item… they want the full ensemble…. Yet no one has got a UI that enables mixing and matching an outfit. Tragic! Then there’s the check-out process… don’t even get me started. Total POO!
  2. What has been the greatest game changer in the UX and usability sectors over the past 10 years?
Mobile. Hands down. Discreet devices have always been game changers, and always will. We’ve had convergence, and now we’re about to see connected.
  3. What do you think are the biggest challenges companies face utilising UX?
    Data extraction and transposition.
  4. Do you have any UX pet peeves?
UX Bloggers. No one really has anything new to say. It’s a re hash of something else and it’s frankly boring………… No I don’t blog.
  5. If you could have any super power what would it be and why?
Good question. I’d like to be able to be invisible, but also see through walls, whilst flying at 300 MPH. I did consider time travel, but on reflection…. I don’t want to know where I’ll be in 5 days let alone 5 years.
